Threadster Online Pop-up Shop

10 Sep

PERTH fashion designers can connect with a previously untapped market today thanks to two local entrepreneurs who spent their weekend in an old bank vault.

Threadster was born from Aaron Dufall, who pitched the idea at the city’s first Startup Weekend – a 54-hour event that aims to connect like minds in a bid to launch successful companies.

Mr Dufall said he had been “bouncing” the idea around with his mate, Darcy Laycock and decided to test their “baby” on the weekend.

“It’s an online market place, an online pop-up shop for emerging fashion designers,” Mr Dufall said, adding the items would be up for a limited time.

“It’s just so hard for them to get out there, their stuff is really great.”

The 29-year-old site supervisor in construction said the idea came after watching “really great” designers struggling with keeping designs fresh and starting a new business at the same time.

After pitching the idea to about 100 participants on Friday night, in less than 60 seconds, the pair became a team of ten – with the other eight hailing from a business and technical backgrounds.

In the depths of an old bank vault, renovated and now home to Space Cubed, Mr Dufall said the group nutted out the business model before visiting a South Perth fashion market to test its popularity.

“From designers we had a huge amount of interest… they were super excited to have something like this come about,” he said.

Mr Dufall said the website, which is already live, would soon include an online ordering and payment system, but until then would manually connect customers with designers.

“The challenge for us is to get both ends marrying up… get 1000 designers into the system and then start driving traffic to really promote them and get them out there,” he said.

Eccentric Pear Pop-up Shop [Fremantle]

23 Aug

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Eccentric Pear is a funky new ‘pop up’ retro furniture store, the latest addition to the Freo pop-up strip on Adelaide Street.

Michele and Natasha Pene are a mother/daughter partnership and proud founders of this funky ‘pop up’ retro furniture store. With creative backgrounds, combined of arts, interior design and upholstery to name a few, this dynamic duo keeps busy giving new life to tired old furniture….restoring, re-upholstering and reviving old items.

Alive with the flare of 60’s chic, with antique quirks and a couple of new pieces thrown into the mix, the store takes on a real homely feel that allows you to invision what the furniture could look like in your own living area, bedroom or dinning room.

Situated on the corner of Point st and Adelaide Terrace in Fremantle, the creative pair have injected colour and funk back into a previously empty space.

It’s hard to say what you might you find on any given day in Eccentric Pear, as the furniture is literally walking out the door? But if you get in quick you will fall in love with comfy eames era lounge chairs still in original pale blue vinyl. There’s a great restored teak bar in the front corner window complete with square orange geometric design. A gorgeous boomerang arm 3 seater lounge in original vinyl sits nearby. The seat cushions have been newly covered in a chocolate, gold and taupe retro print. There are beautiful lamps and glass decanters placed on bars and buffets. Teacups on tables, original and retro paintings on the walls and one of a kind re-upholstered chairs in bright colours and designs.

While you make up your mind, dig into the big bowls of giant gumballs!

Where? Corner of Adelaide St & Point St, Fremantle

When? You can find Michele and Tash at Eccentric Pear from 10 till 5 Tuesday-Friday and 10 till 2.30 Saturdays

“Basic Needs” Pop-up Restaurant [Perth]

18 Jul

As much as we love our pop-up shopping, it is an absolute delight to end a day of shopping at a pop-up restaurant. Is it the novelty of trying a new restaurant? or is it knowing that the restaurant won’t be around for long that makes the food taste sooo much better?

Basic Needs is a pop-up restaurant happening every Thursday @ The Bird’s cosy courtyard in Northbridge. Not only do we love a short menu, but let’s face it…where else can you get such good value for money in Perth?

Go dine with Bobby the Baker, the 21-year-old epicurean, bringing his cool vibe to the city. “It’s basic foods which are reconstructed, using local produce and select obscurities,” Bobby says.

Enjoy this place with some close friends…great food, live music! Pardon the pun, but this place is a great entree to the world of pop-up dining!  Bon appetit 🙂

Where? The Bird, 181 William Street, Northbridge

When? every Thursday in July through August from 5pm til late
